Art and Religion: Nepsis explores certain flexible qualities about human identity in nature and culture, using ‘the search for the real’ of the studio artist, the philosophy of science, and religious practice–yoga, monastic asceticism, et al–to identify and ponder salient issues in the construct of perception.
“I graduated from college with a focus on English Literature and Studio art- 1973. I felt confident about my ability to make art- paintings and poems- and the place that created for me in the world! By 1975 I was living in a Benedictine monastery where I was baptized that same year, September 14th, by a Chinese monk, Fr. T. Yang PhD. He taught me Roman Catholic Catechism, Church History and Chinese Brush Painting. It was said that I should live in a parish since that was where the bulk of Catholic life was to be experienced for most of the billion plus Catholics in the world. (The monastery had about 30 monks.) So, I did. From there I went to a Roman Catholic Seminary where in addition to Theology, Scripture Studies and pastoral training, I did a Masters project involving Buddhism, Shamanism, the Hesychasm and Aesthetics- then parish work and a PhD from Berkeley, 1995. These studies and inclination required ‘field work’ around the world- See Nepsis Foundation Cycle I, Chapters One-Nine and Cycle III, Chapters One – Four. The frightening transaction between these various disciplines has been edifying. What follows illustrates this exchange.”
